Sewing on the Horizon

Back in the summer of 2024 I bought my first sewing machine, and even though I’ve never been taught to sew I’ve made myself a few things and have really loved figuring out how to read patterns teaching myself various techniques (with the help of YouTube, lol). I’ve made 2 Petrichor Pinafores by Sew Liberated, as well as a Persea Jumpsuit by Sew Willow. I have accumulated a few patterns since then, however, I’ve not shopped for fabric for them. This past week, however, while vacationing with my family, I found some amazing curtains and tablecloths at a church charity shop that I thought were beautiful and that they would make delightful pieces of clothing!

Thrifted fabrics! Four tablecloths (left) and three curtains (right)

I feel like I always have to say that the photo doesn’t do them justice, but regardless, I think they are so pretty. I washed them right away and was pleasantly surprised to find that they weren’t stained at all, and that they also don’t appear to have any sun damage! The tablecloths are a bit thicker than the curtains, so I’ll take that into consideration when I’m choosing what to make with them.

I know I want to make another Petrichor Pinafore, and I think I might use one of the two yellow tablecloths for that one.

Not the best photo, but I just love this pinafore, and it fits me perfectly!

As for the rainbow tablecloth, I have a McCall’s pattern that I want to make. This is a picture of the pattern packet, and I would like to make view D. I’ll have to check my fabric amount to see if I can get that one out of how much I have, but I can also shorten it to be more like view C if I need to.

As for the other fabrics, I have a few thoughts. I know I’d like to make a Tate Romper, as well as a Hinterland Dress at some point this year, but am not sure what fabrics I’ll use for them. I’m thinking that the curtains will become the romper, they have a lighter, airier feel than the tablecloths, and I also love the pattern for a geometric fabric. I’ve seen quite a few finished Tate Rompers when I search the hashtag on insta, and I’m really drawn to the ones using a nice patterned fabric.

Being so new to the sewing world I don’t have much experience with sewing pattern companies that I should be checking out. If there are any suggestions you have for pattern designers I should be checking out, let me know!
