Life update, website work and knitting progress

What a good/busy week we had last week! As some of you know, our daughter is heading to college this fall and will be attending UCLA to major in math (data science). Last week we had her freshman orientation, hers for 2 days and the parent session for one day. We went down to L.A. on Wednesday where I had booked an Airbnb and all three of us had orientation Thursday morning. We dropped Georgia off at the freshman location and then headed over to the parent session. They had a nice breakfast and lunch for us, and we were given some really helpful information. The campus was beautiful, and we found ourselves marveling at the fact that it was in the middle of such a huge city – everything on campus was so lush and isolated from the typical Los Angeles sights and sounds. Georgia stayed at the dorms that night and had another full day of orientation on Friday, whereas Dan and I stayed back at the Airbnb and decided to go to the La Brea Tar Pits on Friday. It was a great day of exploring, and we also went to a gallery across the street from the Tar Pits and had lunch at a little burger joint.

We also had a chance to stop in at The Knitting Tree LA where we met the owner who wrote the pattern for the Emotional Support Chicken, as well as had the chance to see a number of the chickens they had on display. I bought some spinning fiber and some yarn, both of which I’ll make sure to take photos of soon and share with you here. I am looking forward to stopping by again in the future, especially since we’ll have 4 years of visiting our kiddo at UCLA that we plan to turn into little weekend stays from time to time.

Another thing I have been working on is this website, specifically in adding a page for fiber-community events and places to grow, connect and learn in California’s Central Valley. I’m trying to compile a list of knit-nights, craft events, places to create, places to learn, and places to shop in our area so that there is a comprehensive list of what is available to the people in my area. I’ll add a sidebar link once I have that ready.

Lastly, I have finished the main colorwork chart for The Secret Garden cardigan I have been working on. There is still one more small chart to go, another section of vines similar to the ones at the beginning of the yoke, however, I have the option to split for sleeves first and do the final chart on the body and arms separately, or I can add them now and split for sleeves after they are complete. I have put all stitches on hold so that I can wash and block the yoke tonight, then I’ll have a better idea of fit and be more confident in my decision about where to work the last chart into the sweater.

I’ll post photos after blocking too, just in case anyone has an opinion about whether the final chart should go before or after the split for sleeves.
